What happens to an Acorns account after death?

Last verified: September 3, 2026

The short answer: Contact Acorns support and provide documentation establishing the user's death. Acorns' program agreement says it may then verify and transfer funds to named beneficiaries. If an Invest or Later account has no named beneficiary, Acorns may create a restricted decedent account while it verifies the executor or administrator and receives distribution instructions.

Product Question to ask
Acorns Invest Is a beneficiary recorded?
Acorns Later Which IRA beneficiary and distribution rules apply?
Acorns Checking Which bank and account-death process applies?
Acorns Early Who is the owner or custodian, and who has successor authority?

How do you report the death?

Open an official Acorns support request. Provide the user's name, the account information available from statements, and documentation showing the death. Ask Acorns for a list of every product associated with the user and the claimant documents required for each.

Acorns says it is not required to act until it receives documents establishing the user's death. Once those documents are accepted, it can verify named beneficiaries and begin the transfer process.

What if there is no beneficiary?

For open Invest or Later accounts without a beneficiary, the program agreement permits Acorns to create a decedent account. The executor or administrator must provide the paperwork Acorns requests to establish identity and authority.

The decedent account may have limited functionality and no permitted transactions. It is a holding mechanism while the estate process is resolved, not an ordinary account the family can operate.

Avoid premature IRA instructions

An Acorns Later account is a retirement account. Do not request a payout solely to finish the paperwork. Ask Acorns what inherited-account or distribution choices are available, then have the beneficiary review tax consequences before signing.

Keep the support case, accepted-document confirmation, and distribution instructions together. Do not use the deceased user's password or continue automated transfers after learning of the death.

Acorns' program agreement controls the general process; support provides the current documents for the specific account and beneficiary.
