Who can open the account?
PenFed says it can establish an estate account when the decedent was a PenFed member or when the executor qualifies for membership. Its forms page also says the executor is not required to become a member merely to administer the estate account.
Complete every field on the estate application and use the estate's legal name consistently across the IRS letter, court papers, and account application.
What products can an estate use?
PenFed publishes checking, savings, money-market certificate, and ownership forms for estate accounts. It says an IRA cannot be opened under an estate, loans cannot be opened under an estate, and ATM or debit cards are not allowed.
Those restrictions make the account an administration vehicle rather than a replacement personal account. Use it for estate receipts, valid expenses, and documented distributions.
Is this the same as claiming the deceased member’s old account?
No. Settling the deceased member's existing account determines who owns or can claim those funds. Opening an estate account creates a separate account for the court-appointed representative. Ask PenFed which process must happen first.
