What happens to a Discord account after death?
Last verified: September 3, 2026
The short answer: Discord does not offer memorialization or account transfer. A family member can ask Discord Support to delete a deceased user's account. When the request comes from an address other than the one attached to the account, Discord may require the account email and username, proof of death, proof of relationship, the requester's identification, and an explicit deletion request.
Discord options at a glance
| Request | Discord's published position |
|---|---|
| Account access or private data | Discord does not provide access, disclose personal information, or share account data through this process |
| Delete the account | Submit a support request with the required verification |
| Memorialize the account | Not available |
| Transfer the account | Not available |
| Billing question | Submit a separate billing support request |
What should a deletion request include?
Discord's deceased-user guidance asks for the email address and username associated with the account. If the request comes from a different email address, prepare a death certificate or coroner's report, proof of the requester's relationship, and a valid photo ID or passport.
The relationship document can include a marriage or birth certificate, will, or estate appointment document. Discord says sensitive details such as dates of birth and addresses may be redacted while names remain visible.
State the requested action clearly: deletion of the account associated with the supplied email or username. Send documents only through Discord's official support process.
Can the family obtain messages or take over the account?
Discord says it does not provide account access, disclose personal information, make changes, or share account data for a deceased-user request. It also does not currently memorialize or transfer accounts.
Do not impersonate the deceased person or search private messages through credentials that were not lawfully provided for that purpose. If records may be relevant to litigation or an investigation, have the reviewing attorney determine whether a preservation or legal request is appropriate before seeking deletion.
What about Nitro or other charges?
Use Discord's billing category for subscriptions or purchases tied to the account. Keep copies of the request and any billing confirmation. Discord also says accounts inactive for two years or more may be scheduled for deletion, but a verified support request gives the family a documented path rather than waiting.
Discord's process is deletion-focused. It does not provide memorialization, transfer, or routine access to the deceased user's private account data.
