The short answer: El Dorado divides probate by geography. Western Slope estates are filed at 2927 Meder Road in Cameron Park and assigned to Department 9; South Lake Tahoe estates are filed at 1354 Johnson Boulevard and assigned to Department 4. E-filing is mandatory for represented parties and optional for self-represented parties. Original wills and codicils must be filed on paper.

The court posts probate tentative rulings after 2:00 p.m. the court day before the hearing. Most uncontested matters need no appearance when a proposed order has been submitted and the tentative does not require one.

Which courthouse handles the estate?

El Dorado's local assignments distinguish the Western Slope from South Lake Tahoe. The court does not say that a filer may choose whichever branch is more convenient. Use the branch serving the decedent's county address and confirm the assignment if the address is near the geographic boundary.

Western Slope probate is an all-purpose Department 9 assignment. South Lake Tahoe probate is assigned to Department 4. The accepted notice and case portal control if the court later assigns a different department.

Is e-filing required?

Yes for attorneys and other represented parties. A self-represented filer is exempt from mandatory e-filing and may use the clerk's office. Electronic submissions through an approved provider received by 11:59 p.m. on a court day are deemed filed that day; weekend or holiday submissions are deemed filed the next court day.

Provider transaction and payment fees may apply. A valid fee waiver removes the provider fee, but confirm how the selected provider processes the waiver.

The original will cannot travel in the electronic envelope. The court expressly excludes original wills and codicils from e-filing, along with bonds, lodged exhibits, subpoenaed documents, and copy requests. Probate Code section 8200 generally requires delivery of the original within 30 days after the custodian learns of the death.

How do tentative rulings work?

Civil and probate rulings post after 2:00 p.m. the court day before the hearing. Department 9's local probate rule says most regularly calendared probate matters will not actually be heard. An uncontested petition, report, or account may be granted or denied on the papers, with no appearance, when a proposed order was submitted and the ruling does not mandate attendance.

Read the entire ruling. If it requires an appearance, attend. A party seeking oral argument on a matter where argument is available must notify the assigned department by 4:00 p.m. the day before the hearing. The local rule limits argument in many routine probate matters, so a request does not guarantee it.

Can you appear remotely?

Probate participants seeking remote attendance must submit the court's request and receive approval, then register for UDC. RA-010 is the statewide notice form listed for probate. The automatic exceptions described by the court apply to specified proceedings such as civil case-management conferences—not ordinary probate petitions.

The published probate charge is $25 plus a $10 convenience charge and payment processing. A valid fee waiver or other exemption avoids those remote fees. Remote attendance remains subject to judicial approval and can be denied when an in-person appearance is necessary.

Are county-specific forms required?

The local forms page lists C-40, Declaration of American Indian Status, as mandatory for probate and P-2, Due Diligence Statement, as optional. Check whether C-40 applies to the particular estate filing and include it when required; do not assume a complete Judicial Council packet is necessarily a complete El Dorado packet.
