How probate works in Mono County

Last verified: July 20, 2026

The short answer: Mono's Civil Clerk is based at 100 Thompsons Way, Mammoth Lakes, with mail sent to P.O. Box 1037, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546. The clerk is open Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and Friday until noon; phone service at (760) 924-5444 is 9:00 a.m.–noon. Probate e-filing is permissive. Fax filing ended March 15, 2025.

Mono also has a Bridgeport branch open only Tuesdays. The accepted notice controls which courthouse hosts the hearing. Routine non-evidentiary probate hearings may be remote without filing RA-010, though notice still must be served; evidentiary hearings and trials ordinarily require in-person attendance.

Filing and original-will handling

Use an approved EFSP, the Mammoth Lakes counter, or mail. Do not use the former fax channel. Provider charges may be added to the filing fee.

The original will still needs physical delivery. Probate Code section 8200 generally gives its custodian 30 days after learning of the death. Preserve it intact and ask the Civil Clerk how to link it to an e-filed petition.

Hearings, remote appearances, and court review

Mono's current public pages do not identify a probate-examiner notes or tentative-ruling portal. Use the case calendar and clerk communications for defects and attendance requirements.

For a non-evidentiary probate hearing, the court waives filing of RA-010 under its local rule, but the appearing party must serve notice under rule 3.672 unless all parties stipulate to waive it. Evidentiary hearings, settlement conferences, and trials are in person unless the judge gives advance written approval. CourtCall requires at least two days' notice and charges its customary fee; Zoom availability follows the court's connection instructions.

Forms, fees, and practical quirks

No generally mandatory local estate-opening form or probate surcharge was identified. The court publishes separate conservatorship investigation requirements, which should not be imported into a decedent estate.
