Computershare deceased shareholder and stock transfer process

Last verified: September 3, 2026

The short answer: Use Computershare's U.S. Estate Hub to report the death and generate a case-specific transfer package. Have the company name, Computershare account number, shareholder's registered address, date of death, and recipient information ready. The required documents depend on whether the shares are TOD, jointly held with survivorship, or part of the estate.

Computershare steps at a glance

Step What to prepare
Notify Shareholder name, company, account number, registered address
Identify registration TOD, joint with survivorship, individual, trust, or estate
Generate package Date and place of death plus recipient and account details
Transfer Signed forms and the documents listed in the generated package

Why does the registration matter?

Computershare says TOD shares generally pass to the named beneficiary and joint shares with rights of survivorship generally pass to the surviving holder. Individually registered shares without those features may require a will, certified death certificate, court appointment papers, affidavit of domicile, or state tax waiver.

Do not assemble a generic packet first. Estate Hub uses the shareholder's circumstances to produce the required documents and transfer instructions.

What information starts the transfer?

Computershare's transfer workflow asks for a holding statement, the company name, account number, registered name and ZIP code, the deceased shareholder's date and legal residence at death, and the recipient's name, address, tax identifier, and intended account type.

The resulting transfer may register shares to the estate or directly to recipients under the will and applicable authority. If physical certificates exist, protect them and follow the package instructions; replacing a missing certificate can add delay and cost.

Signature and cost-basis details

Some transfer forms require a Medallion Signature Guarantee, which is different from notarization. Confirm the required guarantee and value limit before signing. The transfer paperwork may also request date-of-death and cost-basis information for inherited shares.

Keep the Estate Hub confirmation, generated packet, delivery tracking, and copies of all certificates and forms. Ask Computershare to confirm that the deceased flag and transfer were applied to every holding under its administration.

Computershare is a transfer agent for many issuers. Requirements can differ by company, registration, state, and value, so use the generated Estate Hub package.
