Santander Bank deceased account and beneficiary claims
Last verified: August 31, 2026
The short answer: Call Santander at 877-768-2265 or visit a branch to report the death and ask for the checklist for the account's ownership. A surviving joint owner, payable-on-death beneficiary, trustee, and estate representative follow different paths.
Santander deceased accounts at a glance
| Situation | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Report a death | 877-768-2265 or a Santander branch |
| Joint account | Ask Santander to confirm survivor ownership and retitling |
| POD or informal-trust beneficiary | Present the required identity and death records |
| Sole-owner account | Ask what estate authority or simplified procedure applies |
What should you bring?
Start with a certified death certificate, your government ID, account information, and proof of your role. Depending on the account, Santander may request the beneficiary designation, trust records, court appointment, or another state-law affidavit.
Santander's deposit agreement says funds in a joint account generally belong to the surviving owner after one owner dies. Its beneficiary guidance explains that a named beneficiary claims after death rather than becoming an owner during the depositor's life. The actual registration on the account controls.
Do not close the account before pending deposits, automatic payments, and estate records are reviewed. Track all requests in the deceased-account checklist and separately review automatic payments and subscriptions.
Ask Santander for the current account-specific checklist before submitting documents.
