UBS account after death: beneficiary and estate process

Last verified: September 3, 2026

The short answer: Notify the deceased client's UBS Financial Advisor or the UBS Client Support Center. Ask UBS to identify each account's registration and beneficiary record, then obtain the current deceased-account packet. Expect a death certificate and documents proving beneficiary, executor, administrator, or successor-trustee authority.

UBS accounts to separate

Account Controlling issue
Individual brokerage TOD beneficiary or estate authority
Joint brokerage Survivorship language in the registration
IRA Beneficiary designation and inherited-IRA rules
Trust Successor trustee authority
Advisory or managed account Trading restrictions and transfer instructions

How do you begin?

Use the advisor shown on a recent statement or UBS's official support center. Provide the client's name and available account details, report the death, and request a written list of required documents for each account.

Gather the certified death certificate, claimant identification, recent statements, court appointment papers, and relevant trust pages. Do not trade or withdraw through the deceased client's online access.

What do UBS's IRA disclosures say?

UBS's current account disclosures say the accepted beneficiary designation controls the IRA. When a designation does not dispose of the full account, the default described in the disclosure is generally the surviving spouse and then the estate.

The disclosures also permit UBS to require applications, certificates, tax waivers, signature guarantees, and proof of a legal representative's authority before processing a distribution or bypassing an estate or trust beneficiary.

Before choosing a distribution

Ask UBS whether the beneficiary can establish an inherited account, transfer assets in kind, or must complete a particular distribution packet. Retirement-account deadlines and tax treatment differ by beneficiary type, so do not select a payout simply to close the case faster.

Track the UBS contact, accounts identified, restrictions placed, documents accepted, and remaining transfer steps. Direct disputed authority questions to the reviewing attorney and tax-sensitive elections to a qualified tax professional.

UBS publishes broad account rules, while the advisor or support team provides the current case-specific forms.
