How to close a deceased person's Venmo account
Last verified: August 17, 2026
The short answer: Contact Venmo Support through Me → Settings → Get Help → Chat With Us in the Venmo app and ask for an agent. Provide the deceased person's full name and the email address or phone number connected to the account. Venmo requires at least a copy of the death certificate. If the account contains money or crypto, it may also request your photo ID, proof of address, estate-authority documents, and an estate Form W-9. Venmo will not give anyone access to or transfer ownership of the deceased person's login.

How do you contact Venmo after someone dies?
If you have your own Venmo account, open the app and go to Me → Settings → Get Help → Chat With Us, then ask for a support agent. You can also begin from Venmo's Contact Us page.
Tell the agent that the account owner died and provide:
- The deceased person's full first and last name.
- The email address or phone number associated with their Venmo account.
- Your relationship or legal role.
- Whether you know of a Venmo balance, crypto, business profile, teen account, or Venmo Credit Card.
Do not send documents through ordinary email. Venmo says an agent will provide a secure upload link when documents are needed.
What documents does Venmo require to close the account?
Venmo requires at least a copy of the death certificate. When money or crypto remains, it may also ask for:
| Document | Why Venmo may need it |
|---|---|
| Government-issued photo ID | Verify the person making the request |
| Proof of address | Establish where a balance check can be sent |
| Probate court appointment | Show authority as executor or administrator |
| Letters of Administration | Show court authority when there is no acting executor under a will |
| IRS Form W-9 for the estate | Obtain the estate's tax information for the payment |
The required authority depends on the balance, asset type, account facts, and estate. Ask the agent for the exact checklist before obtaining certified copies or sending originals.
What happens to money in a deceased person's Venmo account?
Venmo reviews the account and the requester's authority before releasing a remaining balance. Its current help page says proof of address may be required so a check can be issued. Legal authority and an estate Form W-9 may also be required.
Do not transfer money using the deceased person's phone or credentials. That can bypass ownership, creditor, beneficiary, and tax procedures that apply to the estate. Preserve screenshots or statements you already have, but use Venmo's formal claim process.
If California's simplified transfer procedure may apply, review the California small-estate affidavit guide and ask Venmo whether it will accept that authority for the balance.
What happens to crypto held in Venmo?
Venmo includes crypto assets among the situations that may require additional claimant identification, proof of address, estate authority, and a Form W-9. Tell the agent specifically that crypto is present or suspected so it is not treated as an ordinary zero-balance closure.
Ask how Venmo will value and distribute the asset and what tax records will be provided. Do not assume that login access or ownership of the Venmo profile can be transferred; Venmo says the account itself cannot be transferred to another person.
What if the deceased person had a Venmo Credit Card?
The Venmo Credit Card is issued by Synchrony. Venmo says the credit-card account must be closed before the Venmo account can be closed. Use Synchrony's current deceased-cardholder notification process, then return to the Venmo case.
For the broader debt workflow, see how to close a deceased person's credit cards. A family member generally should not pay a debt from personal funds merely because a collector requests payment; identify the borrower, co-applicant, authorized user, and estate obligation first.
Can you access a deceased relative's Venmo account?
No. Venmo says it cannot provide access to or transfer ownership of an account to anyone other than the original account holder. The authorized path is to ask Support to close the account and resolve any balance.
That distinction protects the deceased person's account and preserves a documented estate transaction. It also means you should not request password resets or authentication codes using the deceased person's device.
How long does Venmo take to close a deceased account?
Venmo does not publish a guaranteed settlement time. Timing depends on whether the account has a balance, crypto, a linked credit card, and whether the submitted authority is complete.
Ask the agent for a case number, keep a copy of every submission, and confirm separately when the balance is released and when the profile is closed.
