How to request Dropbox files after someone dies

Last verified: August 31, 2026

The short answer: First check whether the deceased person's computer contains a lawfully accessible synced Dropbox folder. If not, Dropbox says to open a support ticket. It requires proof of death, proof of identity, and a valid court order establishing both the deceased user's intent that you receive access and Dropbox's legal obligation to provide the files. Access is not guaranteed.

What does Dropbox require?

The support request should include the deceased person's full name and Dropbox email address; your name, mailing address, email, and relationship; a copy of your government ID; and the required court order. Dropbox reviews the package and decides whether it can proceed.

Do not alter or delete a synced folder before preserving it. Check whether files are available offline on the person's computer and document where the device and storage are held. Separate access to the physical computer from authority to use private cloud data.

Also review Dropbox billing and connected team or business accounts. Add the files and request status to the digital-account inventory.

A court order does not guarantee disclosure, and legal requirements depend on the case.
