The short answer: Anyone with the required information can request memorialization. Only a person with approved legal authority can request closure. LinkedIn does not give family members access, passwords, or login credentials.

What does LinkedIn ask for?

Prepare the member's name, LinkedIn profile URL, your relationship, the member's email address, date of death, and an obituary or other proof. A closure request also requires authority such as court-issued Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, or a court order. LinkedIn says a will, trust, or power of attorney is not accepted for this purpose.

Memorialization versus closure

A memorialized profile is locked against sign-in and marked in remembrance. LinkedIn removes it from some automated features and stops notifications, generally within 48 hours. Closure removes the profile; deletion can take up to 30 days. Review connected products and subscriptions before submitting either request.
